Installing HP 4050N print drivers
There are several ways you can print from a Windows machine to the HP4050 printer. This document assumes that you want to print directly using HP's JetDirect protocal.
Choose either:
For those that don't want step-by-step instructions, here are links to the drivers:
These files are also available for download from \\optics\source_local\hp\hp4050N
if you want to access them via your Network Neighbourhood.
-
Click on the Network Neighbourhood icon on your desktop, or otherwise find \\optics\source_local\hp\hp4050N
- Find HP4050_Win9598/disk1/setup.exe (Windows 95/98) or HP4050_NT4/disk1/setup.exe (Windows NT) and double-click on it to run the setup program.
-
Hit the Next/Next/Accept buttons, and then select Custom Installation/Next
and select HP4050N <Next>
- Either:
- Select "Connected directly to network"<Next>
- Type in the name of the port (optips) and select "Create Port".
- If you do not have JetDirect already installed it will be installed for
you, and you will then have to restart your PC to load the software. The setup program will automatically restart and prompt you:
- If you already have JetDirect installed, or once your PC is restarted, you can select "Easy Setup" , select TCP/IP address and enter 128.250.51.160 as
the IP address of the printer at this point in time.
- Alternatively you can print through the Optics print queue by selecting
"Connected to Network Server" <Next> and typing \\optics\optips as
the print queue.
- You will be asked what components you want to install
(e.g. Postscript driver, fonts, README, JetAdmin Software). The PS
driver is essential, the rest are probably not of much interest.
- You should now have a new printer in your printers folder called
HP LaserJet4050N PS. Go to the Start menu, into the Settings then
Printers folder, and check that it is there. Right-click on the
printer icon, select document defaults, set the paper type to "A4" and
the duplex mode to "long side" <OK>. This sets the printer so
that it doesn't scream for US-Letter paper each time you try to
print! You might also like to rename the printer something
sensible like "optips". Right-click on the new printer icon, select
"rename" and type whatever you would like to call the printer.
-
That's it. You should find that when you print something, one of the printers
you can select is an HP LaserJet4050N PS (or whatever new name you gave it). You can select double-sided, A4, etc. Good luck!

MacOS claims to be a user-friendly environment requiring minimal technical
support, so there is no need to provide any instructions for Mac users.
