Anonymous FTP on optics
Anonymous FTP has been restored on optics. Due to whopping security
problems with anonymous ftp (which have caused us problems in the past),
it is read-only. To make something available anonymously, you have
to put it in /home/ftp/pub, and only the superuser can write stuff there.
If you would like to make something available there, just ask Rob, Anton
or Lincoln to copy it there.
An alternative to using anonymous FTP is to put the document in your
web directory from which any person can download the data using a web browser.
For example:
-
Copy the file paper.pdf to your $USER/web directory
-
Change the read permissions by typing chmod -R ugo+rx ~/web
-
Anyone can now download the document by going to the web page location
http://optics.ph.unimelb.edu.au/~barty/paper.pdf
-
The document is also readable by anyone in the group, and may be copied
to individual home directories
(for example, cp ~barty/web/paper.pdf .)
